  • Foster a culture of safety which reflects, promotes and maintains a safe work environment for employees;
  • Provide and promote leadership on national policy, standards, and procedures related to Fire and Aviation Management (FAM);
  • Communicate with and mentor Line Officers on issues related to FAM, including the integration of research and management; and
  • Recognize significant achievement among our peers.

NLOT History

This Power Point is the history and highlights of the NLOT from August 1996 when Jack Ward Thomas charted the NLOT through 2010. Note: This posting does not reflect the history from 2010 through current day; it does provide the history of NLOT and the thought process as to why the Team was formed.

NLOT Membership

A Deputy Regional Forester is the chair of NLOT, the remaining organization is comprised of approximately 25 members, consisting of a District Ranger, Forest Supervisor or Deputy from each Region, facilitator and notetaker.

NLOT Charter

This document highlights the roles, goals and governance of the National Fire Line Officer Team. The NLOT was originally charted by Jack Ward Thomas in August 1996.  The charter was updated in 2014.

Program of Work

NLOT combined with the WO Fire & Aviation Management Leadership Group and Regional Fire Directors to form the National Fire Leadership Council (NFLC).  An example of their program of work is included, although the workload is fluid and changes overtime.   The Program of Work included is from 2018, and is more of a historical reference of how these two entities worked together.
